Description: One of the major objectives of the project PROMETHEUS was to built a generic framework for specifying and exploring terminological knowledge and data. Such a framework is exploited by a Bilingual Information Browser (BILIB) that allow humans to inspect terminology data and knowledge bases over the WWW, supporting them to explore the conceptual system underlying terminology in any domain, and providing rich information concerning the meaning and use of terms. Major issues concern (a) the provision of advanced reasoning services for the exploitation of terminological knowledge and (b) the development of a generic ontological framework for knowledge retrieval and exploration. For the explicit representation of concept systems and the support for advanced reasoning services, PROMETHEUS project used the NeoClassic Description Logic. To provide the necessary ontological commitments for structuring knowledge, which would allow sharing and communicating conceptual and linguistic information about terms we have built a framework based on the principles and semantic distinctions underlying the EuroWordNet (EWN) and SIMPLE Top Ontologies.
