General Information
The Department of Information and Communication Systems Engineering, School of Engineering, University of the Aegean, was established in 1997. Its mission is to provide high-level scientific and technological education and to train engineers with strong knowledge and skills in Information and Communication Technologies.
- Deliver high-quality higher education aligned with internationally accepted standards.
- Maintain a strong engineering and technology-oriented curriculum.
- Continuously follow research and technology developments and adapt the curriculum accordingly.
- Develop graduates who can perform in competitive professional environments, engage in research, and continue with postgraduate studies and lifelong learning.
Successful completion of the first cycle leads to an integrated master degree (level 7 of the National and European Qualifications Framework).
Based on Department records (July 2026), enrolled students were 1485 in undergraduate studies and 156 in postgraduate studies. In addition, 72 PhD candidates were conducting doctoral research. Department alumni total 1117, 1057, and 125 for undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes respectively. The Department maintains an alumni portal at https://alumni.icsd.aegean.gr/.
Objectives and Scope
In the era of the Information and Knowledge Society, the development of modern and effective ICT systems is essential. The Department aims to educate engineers with critical and creative thinking, able to analyze complex problems and design, develop, and manage integrated information and communication systems.
Since its foundation, the Department has adopted the view that classical distinctions between computer science and telecommunications are converging into one integrated engineering field: Information and Communication Systems Engineering.
An information system is understood as an organized set of interacting elements (people, processes, data, software, and hardware) that stores, transforms, and processes information. In this view, communication is not a separate add-on but an inherent dimension of an integrated information system.
Study Programme
The programme is a 5-year engineering curriculum designed using international academic standards and adapted to Greek needs. It covers the full core body of knowledge in information and communication systems and is continuously updated, with student-centered teaching practices and strong links to research and innovation.
