The role of research
Research, both basic and applied, lies at the heart of the transformation of modern society into a knowledge society. Basic research produces new knowledge on which future innovation is built. Applied research responds to the steadily growing need for economic growth and progress through innovation, for the benefit of society and national development. The acceleration of social, economic, and technological change has created a need for close interaction between basic and applied research, especially in the rapidly evolving fields of computing and telecommunications.
Research requires strong planning, infrastructures strengthened through continuous investment, and above all researchers with high expertise, broad and solid scientific background, and a collaborative mindset focused on practical impact. As a knowledge-production system, research is closely linked with education and technology.

Research projects and funding
Department faculty members have extensive experience in designing and implementing competitive research and development projects at international scale. Such projects have been funded by the European Commission and the European Committee for Standardization through programmes such as FP7, FP6-STREP, FP6-IST, TEN/TELECOM, ISIS, Leonardo, ACTS, INFOSEC ETS II, ESPRIT/ESSI, Telematics Applications, ACTION 2, INFOSEC, ESPRIT LTR, BRITE EURAM, INNOVATION, RACE, VALUE II, LRE, ESPRIT, EURET/EURATN, AIM, and others.
Faculty also have strong experience in national competitive R&D projects. Funding bodies include many ministries and public authorities in Greece, along with agencies such as the General Secretariat for Research and Technology, the General Secretariat for Greeks Abroad, the National Centre for Vocational Guidance, the National Organization for Medicines, the Social Insurance Institute, the State Scholarships Foundation, Information Society S.A., and many private-sector organizations.
International collaborations and postgraduate programmes
Using European Commission opportunities through ERASMUS / SOCRATES, the Department has developed and maintains educational and research collaborations with many European universities, including institutions such as the University of London (Royal Holloway), University of Plymouth, University College Dublin, Aston University, Kingston University, Trinity College Dublin, University of Stockholm, University of Lund, Chalmers University of Technology, University of Hamburg, University of Vienna, University of Rome “La Sapienza”, University of Malaga, Polytechnic University of Catalunya, Copenhagen Business School, and many more.
Since academic year 2018-19, the Department operates four single-department M.Sc. programmes and one inter-institutional programme in collaboration with the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens. These programmes aim to advance both basic and applied research and promote knowledge in Information and Communication Systems.
The Department offers the possibility to conduct postdoctoral research in its core subject areas. Interested candidates can find detailed registration and procedure information in the Postdoctoral Research Regulation.
According to Article 7 of the institutional regulation, and in line with the decision of the Department Assembly (regular meeting no. 9 / 2.12.2020), the Department may assign teaching-related duties to postdoctoral researchers without remuneration, such as:
- grading or teaching exercises in undergraduate/postgraduate courses, with agreement of course instructors, including supervision of diploma theses
- supporting laboratory classes in undergraduate/postgraduate courses, with instructor agreement, including participation in educational activities such as summer schools
- participation in invigilation of final exams and interim tests in undergraduate/postgraduate courses
- participation in field research or related research activities, including support for proposal writing, conference organization, and supervision of doctoral theses
The Department decides on a case-by-case basis whether one or more categories of duties will be assigned.
The main criteria are both Department needs and postdoctoral research goals as defined in Article 1 of the regulation. Assignments follow fair-treatment principles and take into account both Department requirements and postdoctoral researchers’ capacities.
Postdoctoral researchers are required to list the Department as their academic affiliation. They also submit an annual progress report, in collaboration with the supervisor, to the Department Assembly for information. Reports are submitted to the postgraduate secretariat between September 1 and October 31.
Postdoctoral Research Regulation - Useful FormsThe Department hosts research laboratories active in cutting-edge ICT topics, with strong international presence.
The Information and Communication Systems Security Laboratory (Info-Sec-Lab) was established in 1999 and includes the largest scientific team in Greece in this specific field, supported by 6 faculty members of the Department and more than 36 postdoctoral researchers, PhD candidates, and postgraduate students. Info-Sec-Lab researchers have participated in a large number of Research and Development projects on Information Security and Privacy Protection, in various studies and security development projects, as well as in scientific committees and organizing committees of international security conferences.
In addition, they have participated in a series of evaluation committees for major Public Sector projects. Most R&D projects have been funded either by European Union programmes (European Commission Programmes) (e.g. IST, CRAFT, Telematics for Administrations, ESPRIT, European Trusted Services ETS I & ETS II, ISIS, INFOSEC, Healthcare Telematics, RACE, ACTS, AIM, VALUE, STAR, ORA, Socrates/Erasmus, etc.), or by the European Standardization Committee (CEN), or by the Greek Government (e.g. General Secretariat for Research and Technology, Ministries of Interior, Economy and Finance, Foreign Affairs, Development, National Defence, Health and Welfare, National Education and Religious Affairs, Justice, as well as bodies such as Information Society S.A., the Hellenic Data Protection Authority, the Social Insurance Institute, the State Scholarships Foundation, etc.).
Also, many projects have been funded by private organizations (e.g. OTE S.A., OPAP S.A., EKO S.A., etc.). Indicatively, during 2009-2018, the laboratory researchers participated in more than 25 international and 58 national projects with a total budget of approximately 5 million EUR. In addition, laboratory members have participated in a series of evaluation committees for major Public Sector projects.
From 2009 until today, laboratory researchers have developed collaborations with more than one hundred and sixty (160) organizations, Universities, Research Centers, Private Enterprises and Public bodies from Greece, EU Member States and the USA. Indicatively, these organizations include the following:

Members of Info-Sec-Lab, as authors of books or book chapters, editors of books or conference proceedings, guest editors of journals, authors of journal papers, or authors of peer-reviewed international conference papers, have contributed to more than six hundred (600) publications on Information and Communication Systems Security and Privacy Protection.
Furthermore, Info-Sec-Lab members have served as Conference Chairs, Program Committee Chairs, Program Committee Members, Organizing Committee Members, and reviewers for journals and international scientific conferences, in total in more than nine hundred (900) cases, on Information and Communication Systems Security and Privacy Protection.
The number of scientific citations by other researchers to publications by Info-Sec-Lab members exceeds eight thousand (8,000). More than eighty (80) international scientific conferences or summer schools have been organized or are being organized during the last 15 years under the Scientific or Organizing Chairmanship of Info-Sec-Lab members, many of them in Samos.

The Computer and Communication Systems Laboratory (CCSL) belongs to the Department of Information and Communication Systems Engineering of the School of Engineering of the University of the Aegean, based in Karlovasi, Samos (Presidential Decree 319, Government Gazette 304/A/31-12-1999), and continuously seeks new collaborations with public and private bodies in Telecommunications, Networks and Computer Systems, both at national and European level.
The current research and educational activity of CCSL members is well balanced between theory and practice and covers a broad range of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) fields. Throughout its operation, and especially in recent years, the team members have participated in a significant number of European/national research and development projects, gaining specialized experience and knowledge in cutting-edge domains. Based on this expertise, CCSL is able to offer innovative solutions for the development and implementation of ICT infrastructure components required for the effective provision of future digital connectivity services.
The laboratory strategy is closely connected with the exploitation of the latest technological advances in wireless and mobile telecommunications, wired and wireless optical communications, communication networks, digital circuit and systems design, as well as Internet and Web technologies. More specifically, CCSL strategy includes leveraging wireless network architectures and Internet technologies to produce innovative results and integrate modern services, as well as designing and developing transmission, routing and application-serving techniques. At the same time, CCSL focuses strategically on research for the transition to next-generation wireless and mobile networks (5G), spectrum-saving techniques, interoperability of heterogeneous networks, cloud computing, reliability and resource management in wireless networks, Internet of Things technologies, and efficient hardware systems for fast signal and image processing.

In today’s Knowledge Society, the huge volume of information produced by organizations and communities imposes drastic changes on markets. It is imperative to restructure enterprises with the goal of collecting, exploiting, and disseminating information that may come from different sources, correspond to different scales, and appear in different forms, in ways that improve the performance of computational systems carrying out daily activities in complex, unpredictable, and dynamic environments.
In this context, members of the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory develop intelligent methods and intelligent systems focusing on:
- Empowering humans and robots to perform tasks in complex and dynamic environments
- Managing and exploiting large volumes of information originating from different (possibly heterogeneous) sources
- Collecting and extracting knowledge from text and data
- Designing and implementing distributed cognitive systems for better exploitation and integration of information
The Database Laboratory was established in 1999 (Presidential Decree 319, Government Gazette 304/A/31-12-1999) and is active in research areas of data management, with particular emphasis on query processing and optimization techniques for multidimensional data, data security and privacy protection, data warehouses and knowledge discovery from data, big data management, location-based services, etc.
Within the Department of Information and Communication Systems Engineering of the University of the Aegean, the Database Laboratory and its staff have supported teaching in at least fifteen different undergraduate and postgraduate courses offered in the Department curriculum since its establishment. The Laboratory has also undertaken and/or supported the development and teaching of data-management-related courses in the curricula of other departments of the University of the Aegean, as well as departments of other higher-education institutions in Greece.
In the Database Laboratory, postgraduate and undergraduate students acquire specialized academic theoretical and technical knowledge in the dynamically evolving fields of data management and, more broadly, data science. Laboratory members actively participate in editorial boards of international scientific journals in the Laboratory's areas of interest, as well as in organizing many high-impact international conferences, either as members of organizing committees, program committees, or as external reviewers. The Database Laboratory maintains collaborations with many research and educational institutions, as well as with other public and private organizations active in research and technology.
